At last! Another dedicated gluten-free bakery to add to this blog! It feels like its been ages since a discovery like this has happened to us here at Gluten Free BCN. So far, most places have been quite a hike to get to, and with varied amounts of satisfaction for our wallets and tastebuds. Now our desires for freshly made pastries, doughnuts, and breads can easily be fulfilled and we don’t have to break our legs or banks to enjoy them.
Pasticelia has been around for little over a year, and admittedly we have been sitting on this information for quite a long time (Sorry!). We like to taste the food first, and revisit on a regular basis to ensure that their quality is of a certain standard before posting – completely altruistic.
Located in the Eixample neighborhood only a few blocks away from Hospital Clinic, this bakery definitely has a consistency and quality worth tasting. Walking through the classic Barcelona doorway, you enter into a modern, sleek, clean dining room with a service counter right in the center. There are about 5 or 6 tables and there have only ever been 1 or 2 occupied during any given visit. The service is friendly, but can sometimes be filling a telephone or take away order, so don’t think that they are ignoring you. Local people know that you have to call in your order to ensure you get the products you want. I prefer leaving it up to chance, and allowing what is available to dictate my decision making process.
They offer delicious baked goodies like nepolitanas (flaky pastries filled with either cream or chocolate), brownies, chocochip and peanut butter cookies, magdalena muffins, and a variety of cakes and breads. They often have other baked goods like cocas (dry, flaky pastry topped with sugar and pine nuts) or cake doughnuts as well. Behind the counter you will find a variety of imported gluten-free products (from Italy, the UK, and Germany) such as micro-brewed BEERS and other edibles.
When we go, there are some things we get EVERY time. The nepolitana with chocolate filling is amazing, as are the choco-peanut butter cookies and the brownies. The doughnuts are also really great, and almost taste like they have blueberries in them. We have sampled a few flavors of cake such as the carrot, orange almond, and chocolate bizcocho. They are not over sweetened and have good, natural flavors…but tend to be a bit dry. The slice is also a bit small for the price, so we tend not to get them.
The bread they bake is spot-on and made fresh daily. They offer many sizes of baguettes made from different kinds of flour and flavors. For example, we have tried the Teff baguette which was soft, slightly sweet, and crusty on the outside just like it should be. One of our MUST HAVE items during every visit is the cheese bread. They are airy yet dense bread rolls that remind us of a cross between an American style biscuit and a brioche roll. We’ve taken them home and made delectable sandwiches and actually used them to make biscuits and Southern style white gravy – heavenly! If you are looking for a quick bocadillo, they also make them to order. You select the bread you want, and they will make a sandwich for you with the filling of your choice. There is almost too much to describe – you just have to go check it out for yourself!
